As Director of Clinical Operations, Debbie Hartzler, OTR/L oversees the health care side of our Clinical Home Modification process. She has over 30 years of experience as an occupational therapist, supervisor and educator, bringing an essential perspective to our work.

Recently, we connected with Debbie to discuss her role at LifewiseCHM. Read below for her insights:

How long have you been with LifewiseCHM?

I just celebrated the 10 year anniversary of my journey with LifewiseCHM in June.

Describe your current role as Director of Clinical Operations.

I oversee the medical side of our Clinical Home Modification process. This includes the work of our therapy staff who perform assessments of individuals and their homes to develop home solutions that increase safety and function. I am a liaison between the insurance companies, contractors, individuals and families to relay medically focused information and Home Modification solutions. I develop and oversee education for all involved in the MHM process.

What is your favorite part of being part of the LifewiseCHM team?

The team itself. We have a dedicated, energized group of caring and skilled individuals who bring their best every day. They are a joy to work with and create a supportive environment that promotes collective problem solving. They are also a lot of fun to spend time with and make me laugh out loud daily.

What motivates you as  Director of Clinical Operations?

Being a respected part of a team working to serve individuals in need and the opportunity to create the best solutions to their individual problems.

    Who, or what inspires you?

I am inspired daily by those who persevere under the most difficult of circumstances. Those who do not let their challenges defeat them but rise to the challenge and are motivated to create ways to deal with them.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?

I was fortunate to know and spend time with all four of my grandparents growing up. They, along with my parents, inspired me to work hard and do my best, be open and honest, be respectful and listen, help those in need, and never come empty handed when you go to visit someone.

What surprises you about work at LifewiseCHM?

That we can have such an impact on someone’s life. I am amazed and gratified when we hear back from an individual or family client telling us how grateful they are to now be able to do everyday tasks. Like the person who cried when they told us this was the first time in the past 6 months that they were able to take a shower.

    What is your favorite quote?

I am a firm believer in the Golden Rule: Treat others as you would like to be treated. It has served me well.
